Plastic Island

An idea, a man, and 250 thousand plastic bottles. Floating in Mexican waters, the artificial island called Joyxee Island, created by Richard Sowa is solely dependent on plastic bottles for buoyancy. For a natural look, Sowa incorporated parts of real plants in order to replicate the appearance of a tropical island. In 2005, though, Hurricane Emily completely destroyed the project; however, with unflagging determination, Sowa once again gathered the plastic bottles and constructed the island. This time, he placed the plant roots within the bottles, allowing them to grow. Not only does Sowa maintain the island, but he also constructed a home there and lives on it.
