Maracatu

It was a busy day for us seniors. We did a variety of things, which included eating, visiting the C.E.S.A.R organization, exploring the Americas'  first synagogue, walking around Old Recife, eating, going on a catamarã ride, seeing a mamulengo presentation, exploring Olinda and eating some more. However, what most impressed was the Maracatu presentation we watched while in Olinda. As soon as the  members walked in we saw the familiar figures being represented.  But it was only when we learned the origin of the Maracatu that we could understand the presence of the Orixás in the dance. It was cool to see the Orixás, which  are a big part of the culture in Bahia, being represented in such a different manner. This cultural diversity was definitely a highlight of the trip;  perhaps the only thing more memorable than that was Maggie and Amaral attempting to dance with the Maracatu performers.
